Pathways
Classes for New Members
Morrisville Presbyterian Church hosts a series of informative and interesting classes that are designed to help any visitor to MPC learn more about our governing body, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and what it means to be a Presbyterian. This course, called Pathways, is a repeating cycle of three classes that will be offered four times during the regular church year between Labor Day in September and Memorial Day in May.
The classes include:
- “I Believe – Professing Faith in Jesus Christ,”
- “We Believe – Introduction to Presbyterian Beliefs,”
- “Decently and in Order – Introduction to Presbyterian Polity,” and
- “Faithful Members – Responsibilities and Privileges of Membership.”
Not sure whether you believe the Apostle’s Creed? Wondering what it means when we say that Presbyterians are a confessional and connectional church? The Pathways class is a great place to ask questions. Polity? Is that a typo? Actually, polity is how the structure of the church works. At the end of class, you’ll understand the roles of elders, ministers, session, presbytery, synod, and the General Assembly.
There is no need to feel self-conscious about not having attended worship in a while. In our hectic times and culture, it is quite understandable. Everyone is welcomed to these classes. These classes are your chance to reconnect with the church and find out if the PC(USA) and MPC are for you.
Although these classes are designed for potential new members to meet the instructional requirement of the PC(USA) to become a member of the church, you are under no obligation to join the church. However, if you are interested in becoming a new member of MPC, all you have to do is attend each class in order to meet the instructional requirement…if a class is missed, you can pick it up on the next round.
Upon attending all four classes in any order, visitors may request to join the church. You will be invited to attend the next meeting of Session to be welcomed into the MPC congregation. Another option is to take one of the three Sunday afternoon lunch seminars. Either way, this class is a great refresher for those who were confirmed decades ago, or for those who have probing questions about why we do what we do. Long-time members of the congregation are encouraged to attend.
