Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE

A massive, 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12th. Initial reports indicate a large number of casualties and widespread damage especially in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is responding to this earthquake through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and its partners. Presbyterian World Mission is gathering information on the safety and status of our mission personnel and ecumenical partners in the area. For updates on the earthquake and the church’s response visit http://www.pcusa.org/pda.

You, too, can be part of God’s answer to prayer for those affected by this disaster. Funds from One Great Hour of Sharing are already helping with the initial response. Through PDA the church hopes to raise an additional one million dollars.

Please support the church’s ongoing relief effort by writing a check to the MORRISVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH with the words "Haiti Earthquake" on the memo.

A Prayer for the People of Haiti

God of compassion, please watch over the people of Haiti, and weave out of these terrible happenings wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted; Guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heals wounds and provides hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffer we all suffer. Trough Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen.

Education Opportunities

Reformed, and Always Reforming — Join Pastors Hancock and Rosenau on 3 January and running through 28 March during Education for All classes(9:30 – 10:20), for a discussion of Shirley Guthrie’s book, Christian Doctrine. We will consider such questions as What Does God Want with Us? The Doctrine of Predestination; Why Doesn’t God Do Something about It? The Doctrine of Providence and the Problem of Evil; Who’s in Charge Here? The Doctrine of the Resurrection; Are You a Christian? The Doctrine of Justification. A best-seller for more than 30 years, Christian Doctrine has introduced thousands to the tenets of the Christian faith. But don’t be intimidated by the title – Guthrie’s book is well-known for being not only thorough, but readable and easy to understand. Books will be available to purchase beginning January 3, 2010.

The Gospel of Luke — Carol Carpenter, Dori Clough, and Katy Yates Brungraber lead this 13-week program that begins Sunday 3 January and continues through 28 March. From the cold of winter, through Lent, we invite you to join three women of faith as they explore the Gospel of Luke. Just what does “the kingdom of God” mean? Each week, a “reporter” will follow Jesus making his way through Galilee. So drop off the children in their education classes, then come and see what the author of Luke highlights about Christ’s journey to the cross.

Master Educator Award — Nominations due by March 31, 2010 The MPC Master Educator Award was created by the Children and Family Council in 2006. The Educational Ministry Council assumed responsibility for presenting the award in 2008. In past years, the award has been presented to Dorine McGary, Elizabeth Dugan, and Nancy Kernan. The award is based on merit, not necessarily to be presented annually, nor to recognize longevity, or to be given only to Sunday morning teachers of children. The award is designed to acknowledge those disciples of Christ who epitomize exceptional educational ministry for the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth at MPC. Forms are available in the communication racks.

Trustee's Update

Paper Retriever Bin — If you haven’t already noticed, we now have a Paper Retriever Bin placed in the lower parking lot near the Ivins Outreach Center. This is one effort we can make to help our environment, and at the same time help the church and this won’t cost us a cent. How does it work? The more we recycle the higher the weight. The higher the weight the larger the quarterly check. Yes, we receive a check for what we recycle. It simply couldn’t be any easier than that.

Here is a list of items we can recycle in our bin. Paper, newspaper, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, weekly advertisement circulars, TV Guides, folders, construction and poster paper, shredded paper, spiral notebook/theme books, office and church mail. (If dropping off shredded paper-please put in a bag. If you use a plastic bag be sure to put holes in the bag so it will compact better. If dropping off theme books please take off the front and back cover-the metal spiral may remain intact. There is no need to remove staples from paper. And lastly please no cardboard or phonebooks.

It’s easy to get started- just place an empty box near your trash at home and/or at your place of business, and place your paper in the box. Then drop your papers off in the bin on Sunday’s before or after church.

Remember, every time our bin is full, our church saves 17 trees from being cut down. Please don’t throw this piece of paper away, recycle it today!

Ivins Outreach Center – is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping senior citizens or the disabled in the Morrisville Borough. Faith in Action —is looking for volunteers. This program works by creating volunteer teams that are called on to serve only one week out of every four to six weeks. An individual will be asked to make only one to three contacts during the week that volunteer team is “on duty”. Transportation to cancer treatments or doctor’s appointments is the largest need of the program. To volunteer or for further information please call 215-428-0500 ext. 103.

Clothing Center – The MPC Clothing Center is open for business on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm during the regular church year between September and May. For more information, please call the church office at (215)–295–4191.

The Clothing Center sales from 1983 through June 2009 totaled $187,488.49. Then, as now, the money earned goes for outreach. The proceeds are being given back to the community, through various organizations for people in need. We thank all who donated to our inventory making the above possible.
